Contrary to what we might think, a healthy heart does not beat at a perfectly rigid, metronome-like rhythm (e.g., exactly 60 beats per minute, or one beat per second). Instead, there are tiny, millisecond-level fluctuations in the time intervals between each consecutive heartbeat:
- Low HRV: The time between heartbeats is nearly identical and rigid. This indicates that your sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight) is dominant, keeping your body in a state of high alert or stress.
- High HRV: The time between heartbeats varies naturally from moment to moment. This indicates that your parasympathetic nervous system (rest-and-digest) is active, showing that your nervous system is flexible, resilient, and ready for deep rest.

Your heart rate and your breathing are hardwired together through a natural biological reflex called Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA):

- How to do it: Inhale quietly through your nose for a count of 4 seconds, then exhale slowly through your nose or mouth for a count of 7 seconds.
